Trowbridge Town
Only Team Still With
100% Winning Record
For the first time this season there was a full complement of 11 games played across the Premier Division and Division 1 of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League. At the start of the day four teams sat top of the division with a maximum six points from their opening two games but after the dust had settled after the day’s action just one, Trowbridge Town, had maintained their 100% winning start to the season. Trowbridge were home to last season’s champions Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development who were still looking for their first point of the season. There was no improvement in that record as Trowbridge ran out comfortable 5-0 winners. Summer signing Ben Wickens set them on their way, firing into the bottom corner after being put through by Scott Baker. Baker went from provider to scorer heading in from point blank range to put his side 2-0 up. The third Trowbridge goal came from an unlikely source, Ryan Baggs firing into the bottom corner of the net from 30-yards out giving the keeper no chance, with manager Jamie Jordan noting that it was the first goal Baggs had ever scored in Senior football, his previous goals having come from the penalty spot. Ali Bradley added a fourth before Olly Dew completed the scoring, picking up a loose ball from a corner and slotting it into the net for Trowbridge’s fifth and final goal of the game. With results elsewhere it meant Trowbridge moved two points clear at the top of the table.

The game at Nursteed Road, where Wroughton were the visitors, ahead of the game looked to be Devizes Towns’ most serious test so far this season, with Wroughton also unbeaten going into the game, and so it proved. Wroughton’s leading scorer Jonathan Peachey-Score has started the season on fire smashing two hat-tricks in Wroughton’s opening two games and it took him just five minutes to take his tally to seven. After two clean sheets in their opening two games that was the first goal Devizes had conceded since dropping down from the Western League. Devizes got themselves back on level terms from the penalty spot after a handball incident that saw Wroughton skipper Chris Flannagan sent to the sin-bin for disputing the penalty award. Keiran Gleed put the penalty away for his second goal of the season to make it 1-1. It was then end-to-end action for the rest of the game as both sides went in search of a winner. Both sides created some good chances but neither side were able to find the net again. Devizes cause was not helped by having a player sent off after 65 minutes and in the end the two sides had to settle for a point apiece.

The other two sides who started the day on six points, Frome Collegians and Kintbury Rangers, met at the Old Showfield Ground with one or other or both scheduled to lose their perfect records. In the end it was both teams as they shared four goals and the points. Goals from Owain Wheeler and Bradley Passey put Kintbury two goals to the good but From Collegians pulled one back on the stroke of half time through Aaron Baines to pull themselves back into the game. They continued to go in search of an equaliser after the break and if the goal in the first half came late on, they left it even later to get the equaliser, Adam Pickford firing in deep into injury time to salvage a point for his side. The point for Frome left them in third spot with Kintbury just a place below on goal difference.
Both Malmesbury Victoria Dev and Marlborough Town were looking for their first points of the season when they met at Elcot Lane this afternoon. After a stalemate, where neither really looked like scoring in open play, the two sides had to settle for a point each after it finished 0-0. The closest the game came to a goal was the award of a penalty to Malmesbury Victoria Development just after the half hour mark, but Aaron Sanghera’s spot kick was well saved by Marlborough Town keeper Bradley Little.
Blunsdon were another side who started the day unbeaten after their opening two games as they made the long journey to the south of the county to play Salisbury FC Dev at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium. That unbeaten record remains intact tonight, but they had to settle for a point following a 1-1 draw. Salisbury went in front in the first half through Dyllan Roocroft, Roocroft scoring his third goal of the season to make it 1-0 to the home side at the break. However, Blunsdon maintained that unbeaten start to life in senior football with an equaliser in the second half, last season’s top scorer Lee Toomey with the goal, fellow strike partner Eliot Wheatley with the assist.

Stratton Juniors had started the season with two 4-0 home defeats and were once again at home this afternoon with Odd Down Development the visitors to Stratton’s new ground at Merton Fields. On a good day for the club, Stratton ended a run of eight straight league defeats, that included six at the back end of last season, by securing that first league win at their new home. In a physical encounter, goals from Corey Cullen and Leigh Brown f-did the damage for Neil Lee's side in a 2-1 win that lifted them out of the bottom three in the table. Odd Down’s reply was scored by Bill Tuner.

After a heavy defeat on the opening day of the season Calne Town Reserves had bounced back in midweek with an away win at Melksham Town Reserves and they were keen to build on that win when they visited last season’s runners-up Pewsey Vale. However, they found the young Pewsey Vale side too strong on the day, as Pewsey picked up their first points of the season courtesy of a 4-1 win. Captain Liam Edmondson led the way and there were further goals from Stanley Paggett, Zak Messenger and Rory England, former Devizes Town player Caleb Hollow with the goal for Calne Town Reserves.

After that midweek loss against Calne Town Reserves, Craig Kent’s Melksham Town Reserves side were keen to get their season up and running when they entertained Shrewton United. Through no fault of their own this was Shrewton’s first game of the season having seen their opening two fixtures against Malmesbury Vics Development and Pewsey Vale postponed. It was to be Melksham’s day as goals from Cameron Pearce and Tom Dowell secured all three points for Melksham following a 2-0 win.

There was a full round of fixtures also in Division One with the big match being the one between the two sides who had won their opening games, Kintbury Rangers Development and Ludgershall Sports. A goal from Jacques Tonge gave Kintbury a half time lead but Ludgershall got themselves back on level terms after the break, Luke Holden with his fifth goal in just two games to make it 1-1. That is how it finished, a good away point for Ludgershall, whose player Ashley Doney had picked up a serious injury early in the first half. All from the Wiltshire Senior League wish Ashley a speedy recovery from his injury.

Another game involving two of the sides expected to be challenging for honours in Division One at the end of season was at Kingsdown School, Swindon where two new sides, Kingsdown Lions and Larkhall Athletic Development met. In a tight affair on a difficult pitch, a solitary goal from Larkhall’s Jack Kelsey was all that separated the two teams as James Riccio’s new club got their season up and running with a victory.
The final game of the day was at the Redhouse where Purton entertained Devizes Town Reserves looking to improve on a difficult opening day game last week against Ludgershall Sports. When the two sides had met last season in the Premier Division, both sides had won their respective away games and that trend continued in the first meeting this season with Tom Bull’s side returning to Devizes with all three points following a 5-0 success. Chris O’Donovan led the way bagging a brace and there were further goals for Tyler Smith, Will Hoskins and Ewan McConachie.
