Scott Baker who scored five in Trowbridge Town's 7-1 win over Odd Down Development

League leaders Trowbridge Town were back in action on Tuesday night when they made the relatively short trip to Bath to play Odd Down Development. Trowbridge had won on both of their previous visits to the Lew Hill Memorial Ground and that run continued on Tuesday night following an emphatic 7-1 win. Leading scorer at the start of the night Ben Wickens set them on their way with the opener very early on and it then very much became the Scott Baker show with last season’s top scorer firing a hat-trick before half-time.  With a further goal from Ollie Dew Trowbridge led 5-0 at the break and were clearly going to retain top spot going into the weekend.  They added a sixth shortly after the break and it was than man Baker again with his fourth of the game. Odd Down pulled one back almost immediately through substitute Tyrone Mulholland but there was to be no big comeback as Baker added his fifth of the game to make the final score 7-1 and four wins from four for Trowbridge ahead of Saturday’s tasty looking fixture against another unbeaten side Wroughton.

Devizes Town had dropped their first points of the season on Saturday when they were held at home by Wroughton. They returned to winning ways on Tuesday night with a strong performance against the young Salisbury FC Development side. Leading 1-0 at the break two further goals after half time secured a 3-0 win which could have been a lot bigger if the chances created on the night had been taken. On target for Devizes were Derek Wheeler who bagged a brace and Jamie Walters. The win saw Devizes remain in second spot on goal difference ahead of Saturday’s encounter with Blunsdon.
Frome Collegians started the night in third place in the table but had what looked a tricky looking away game at Melksham Town Reserves who had won one and lost one of their opening two fixtures. Dean Caslake fired Frome ahead on 15 minutes and the closest Melksham went to an equaliser was on the half hour mark when a shot from Tom Dowell smashed against the goal frame and it remained 1-0 at the break. Melksham did get themselves back on level terms in the 65th minute, youngster Rueben Rule netting with a low finish past Ben Forester in the Frome goal. Ten minutes later Jack Newman went close to restoring Frome’s lead when put clean through, but Melksham keeper Harry Pickering pulled off the save to deny Newman. Melksham created a number of chances but were none were taken, and they were left to rue those missed opportunities when substitute Pete Weston crossed to Dean Caslake to fire home his second of the game and secure the points for Frome who remain in third spot in the table, with a home game against Marlborough on Saturday.
Kintbury Rangers sat fourth in the table on goal difference ahead of the visit of Shrewton United on Tuesday night. Shrewton had lost on their last two visits to Kintbury Recreation Ground and did not get off to the best of starts as goals from Cameron Sanchez, Will Freer and James Keen saw Kintbury lead 3-0 at the break. However, Shrewton manager Jesse Walters had the consolation of seeing his side win the second half thanks to a hat-trick from Nathan Osgood but further Kintbury goals from Aidan Maycock and a second of the season from Theo Pennicot-Bowen saw Kintbury take all three points courtesy of a 5-3 final scoreline. Interestingly this had been the exact score on Shrewton’s first ever visit to the Recreation Ground back in 2017-18. Next up for Kintbury is a first ever visit from Odd Down Development whilst Shrewton will look to pick up their first points of the season against Stratton Juniors.
The other two unbeaten sides at the start of the night, Blunsdon and Wroughton, were up against each other at Sutton Park. When the two had met in pre-season in a Charity Cup Final Blunsdon had run out 4-1 winners but there was to be no repeat as Wroughton avenged that earlier cup loss with a 3-1 win. Blunsdon went in front early on through Lee Toomey, Toomey getting on the end of a ball in from the left from Nick Craft for his second of the season. However, Luigi Fernandez had Wroughton back on level terms after 25 minutes, heading in from a free kick from the right. Wroughton then went in front for the first time in the game five minutes before half time, Luke Saunders firing into the bottom corner of the net after his first attempt at goal was saved by Blunsdon keeper Will Gage, Saunders converting the rebound to make it 2-1 to Wroughton. Blunsdon went close to restoring parity, but goal scorer Toomey saw a powerful effort saved in spectacular fashion by the Wroughton keeper Ed Salsbury. Wroughton made certain of the three points on the hour mark, Sam Long adjudged to have been fouled in the box by keeper Gage. The striker picked himself up, dusted himself down and fired the spot kick low and under the dive of Gage to make the final score 3-1 to Wroughton. Blunsdon have another tough one on Saturday with that trip to Devizes and for Wroughton it is that visit to Trowbridge when they will look to see if they can become the first team this season to take points off the title favourites.Your Sport Swindon were at the game and subscribers can watch highlights of the game either by clicking on the link below or using the link on the Your Sport Swindon page of our website.

Pewsey Vale, after a narrow opening day defeat at the hands of Kintbury Rangers, made it two wins on the bounce following a comfortable 6-1 home success over Stratton Juniors that saw them move up to sixth spot in the table. Leading 3-0 at half time thanks to two goals from Stan Pagett and a Rory England strike, they matched that first half tally after the break with England getting his second of the game and Zak Messenger also bagging a brace, Josh Bolton with the consolation goal for Stratton Juniors. Next up for Blunsdon is that tough looking away trip to Devizes whilst for Pewsey it is also an away trip to last season’s championship rivals Royal Wootton Bassett Town who have had a difficult start to the season.
The final game on Tuesday night was at Bremhill View where Calne Town Reserves entertained Marlborough Town. In the league's season preview Marlborough manager Kenny Muir had said one the aims this season was to make his side hard to beat and they had picked up their first point on Saturday in a 0-0 draw with Malmesbury Victoria Development to show evidence of that. On Tuesday night, Marlborough and Calne went into the game on with both having won four and drawn four of the 12 previous meetings in recent years and another close encounter was anticipated and so it proved. Nathan Good put visitors Marlborough in front getting on the end of a corner kick but Calne got themselves back on level terms in a similar fashion, Woody Smart heading in from another corner. Calne went in search of a winner but spurned two or three really good chances and it ended all square with the points shared once again in a fixture between the two sides.
There was one game on Wednesday night to complete the midweek action and it involved a local derby between the two Development sides from Malmesbury Victoria and Royal Wootton Bassett Town. Malmesbury had not won in any of the previous six meetings between the two sides but with Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development’s young side having a tough start to the season Troy Prentice’s side were hoping to bring that recent record to an end. They did just that with most of the damage being done in the first half. James Archer headed the home side in front on 26 minutes before Joe Tranter doubled the lead seven minutes before half time after neat set-up play between Archie Walsh and Ryan Collins. A much improved second half performance from the visitors saw them restrict Malmesbury to just one more goal, Jack Duckers making sure of all three points after being set up by Dale Richards playing against his former club to give Malmesbury their first win of the season and lifting them into the top half of the table.
