Trowbridge Town
Pushed All the Way
By Wroughton

Wroughton keeper Ed Salsbury, who was involved in the incident for Trowbridge's second goal, elevates ahead of an incoming corner

The big match of the day in the Premier Division was at the Daykin Estates Ground home of Trowbridge Town where another unbeaten side Wroughton were the league leaders’ visitors. It was a cagey affair in the opening ten minutes with visitors Wroughton probably having the greater possession, with Max Scholefield and Jonny Davoille being involved in much of that possession. The first chance of any note came to the home side though, a ball down the left flank from George Bendle saw Josh Howe get behind Wroughton defender Chris Flannagan and his cross-shot went across the length of the six-yard box and wide of the far post. Another chance came the way of the home side three minutes later, Ollie Dew shooting from the edge of the box but his shot was held at the second attempt by Wroughton keeper Ed Salsbury. They were not to be denied for long though. A ball from player-manager Jamie Jordan to Scott Baker saw Trowbridge’s leading scorer take a tumble from a challenge from behind but the ball found its way behind the Wroughton back line and into the path of George Bendle who was in the clear and he ran on to finish in style past Salsbury for 1-0 to Trowbridge with 17 minutes on the clock. Wroughton’s best chance in the opening quarter came in the 23rd minute when the influential Jonny Davoille was brought down just outside the area. Max Scholefield took the free kick but his strike went straight into the wall and rebounded to Davoille who hit a low slow shot back across goal but it went wide of the post. Wroughton fell further behind just after the half hour mark and there was a hint of controversy about the goal. Player manager Jordan hit the ball into the box and keeper Salsbury failed to hold it at the first attempt, his fumble being adjudged by the assistant referee to have crossed the goal line. Wroughton protested strongly that the ball had not crossed the line but after consulting his assistant referee Chris Harris awarded the goal to give Trowbridge a two-goal margin which they safely held until half time.

Wroughton came out second half strongly, seeking to get a foothold in the game with Scholefield and Davoille again involved with much of Wroughton’s best moves, full back Chris Flannagan also making a series of runs down the right flank and putting some dangerous balls into the Trowbridge box. Whilst Wroughton had much of the possession they were struggling to create any clear-cut chances against a well organised Trowbridge defence. They had some half-hearted appeals for a penalty on the hour mark when Sam Long was sent tumbling in the box and whilst he had won a spot kick for his side in midweek on this occasion there was to be no such penalty. Wroughton’s best chance of the game up to that point came ten minutes from time when the division’s leading scorer Jonathan Peachey-Score got behind the Trowbridge defence with a clear sight of goal, but his powerfully hit shot was acrobatically turned over the bar by Trowbridge keeper Cameron Miller.   The striker was not to be denied for long though and he gave his side a foothold back in the game moments later when he again found himself clear of the defence and this time made no mistake firing low past Miller to make it 2-1. Wroughton then threw everything forward in search of an equaliser. Peachey-Score saw a free kick into the box punched away by Miller and the resulting corner came to nothing. By pushing men forward to try and get an equaliser Wroughton were always going to leave themselves vulnerable to the quick counterattack and as the game went into the closing minutes, they were to be caught from such a move. A defence splitting ball beat the offside trap and put George Bendle behind the Wroughton defence, and he made no mistake to register his second of the game and secure all three points for Trowbridge. The 3-1 score line was tough on Wroughton who had played their part in a close game throughout. With manager Ben Jarrett away for the weekend, coach Nathan Hall commented after the game that his side had been unlucky.

“We were unlucky today, we dominated possession for much of the game and got caught on the break at the end”.

Winning manager Jamie Jordan knew his side had had their toughest test of the season so far in maintaining their 100% winning start to the season and commented:

“We were not at our best today, but it was dogged performance and we ground out a result against a side I expect will finish in the top three this season.”

Next up for Trowbridge is a local derby against unbeaten Frome Collegians on Tuesday night, whilst Wroughton travel to Malmesbury Victoria Development the same night.

After last season’s relegation it was important for Devizes Town to get off to a good start in their first ever campaign in the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League and George Bettles side have certainly quickly settled into a winning habit. Whilst they won again this afternoon, they were certainly made to work hard for all three points against newly promoted Blunsdon. In the end a solitary goal from Zac Hiller was all that separated the two sides and that was win number four for Devizes in their first five games as they remained unbeaten and in second spot, two points behind league leaders Trowbridge. Next up for Devizes is what looks another tough looking fixture against Kintbury Rangers on Tuesday night.
Frome Collegians maintained their excellent start to the season with a hard fought 1-0 win over Marlborough Town.  The only goal of the game came just after half time, Jack Newman latching onto a weak back pass and firing in for what turned out to be the only and winning goal. For Frome that is 13 points from a possible 15 ahead of Tuesday night’s big local derby against Trowbridge Town where Karl Freeman will be expecting a much better showing that on their last visit to Trowbridge.

Kintbury Rangers are another unbeaten side who kept on the heels of Trowbridge Town, recording their fourth win in five games with a 3-0 victory over Odd Down Development. First half goals from Luke Conner and Aidan Maycock saw them lead 2-0 at the break and a second of the game from Maycock in the second half made sure of the three points. As a result of the three goals scored, Kintbury moved above Frome Collegians into third spot in the table on goal difference and ahead of top looking match coming up on Tuesday night when they make the trip to Devizes Town Reserves who sit just above them in the league table.
Shrewton United had won 9-0 on their last visit to Swindon to play Stratton Juniors but had then surprisingly lost 3-1 in the return fixture last season. They found themselves 1-0 down early on, Moses Naisarani heading the home side ahead after chasing down a long ball from the back. Russell Fuller had visitors Shrewton back on level terms when he headed in from a corner off a Stratton defender  for 1-1. Still in the first half, Shrewton went ahead for the first time in the match when Taylor Jewell took advantage of an error from the Stratton keeper, nipping in to stroke the ball into the net after a miss-kick by the keeper for 2-1 to the visitors. It remained that way at half time. Second half Stratton sought to get back in the game, seeking to use the pace of their front line with balls behind the defence but Shrewton also had chances to put the game beyond them. The chances that came their way weren’t taken and Stratton made them rue those missed chances when Corey Cullen scored an equaliser, heading in from a corner kick to make it 2-2. In the closing stages of the game Stratton had the chance for a winner, Cullen just failing to get on the end of a Naisarani ball cross-shot into the box but in the end the two sides had to settle for a point apiece. Stratton make the short trip along the A419 on Tuesday night to play near neighbours Blunsdon. The final game of the weekend in the Premier Division was at the Oakfield Stadium where Melksham Town Reserves entertained Pewsey Vale in a hastily arranged fixtures after the two teams scheduled opponents, Salisbury FC Development and Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development had called off the original scheduled fixtures. Both Melksham and Pewsey are to be applauded for their co-operation in getting a game played and Fixture Secretary Phil Cook certainly appreciated the clubs achieving this outcome. The game itself though was one that only Pewsey Vale will look back fondly on, and it was their England boys who did the damage, Rory England hitting a hat-trick and brother Ben adding another in a 4-2 win. On target for Melksham were Rueben Rule, who scored for the second game running, and Elliott Corp.

Just two of the three scheduled fixtures in Division One went ahead with Kintbury Rangers Development calling off their scheduled fixture against Larkhall Athletic. Of the two games that did go ahead, the game at the top end of the table between two of the unbeaten sides Ludgershall Sports and Devizes Town Reserves was expected to be a tight affair and it proved to be just that. Ludgershall had won nine of the previous 17 meetings to Devizes Town’s six victories and they took that tally into double figures with a narrow 2-1 win to maintain their lead at the top of the table. They fell behind to a Tyler Smith goal for Devizes but were back on level terms when leading scorer Luke Holden flicked on a long throw and Aaron Joesph fired in for 1-1. Ludgershall’s winner once again came from a Luke Holden assist, Holden playing a 1-2 with Adam Campbell who netted what proved to be the winner. The win for Ludgershall sent them three points clear at the top of the table and maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

The other game played saw Purton play away from home for the first time this season when they visited Pewsey Recreation Ground. They may still be without a point this evening, but they can celebrate more progress with a good second half performance and their first goal of the season as they went down 5-1 to Pewsey Vale Development. Melvin Tatah scored two against his former club, having followed last season’s Purton manager Frank Hunt to Pewsey. The other Pewsey goals came from Jordan Ball, Harvey Rutherford and Harry Field on a good afternoon for the club with both their sides winning. On target for Purton midway through the second half was Harrison Bennett.
