Both Veterans’ Divisions, after a month of games, are now starting to take shape with three teams in the Mid Wiltshire Division still unbeaten after the first four weeks of games and just two in the North Wiltshire Division.

In the Mid Wiltshire Division last season’s champions Melksham Town are one of those three unbeaten teams but they dropped points on Monday night for the second time this season when they were held to a 0-0 draw by last season’s runners-up Bradford Town. However, with leading scorer Charlie Griffin amongst several key players unavailable on the night, Melksham will probably be viewing it as a point gained against one of their expected rivals for the title rather than two points dropped. Melksham remained top of the early table but saw the teams just below them all close the gap.

On a night of close games there was one exception and that was at Meadow Lane Westbury where the home side Westbury United took on Amesbury Junior Badgers. It was very much a one-sided affair. Westbury led 6-0 at the break and added a further five goals in the second half. Leading scorer Philip Hampson led the way smashing a first half hat-trick in an eight-minute spell in the middle of the half, an own goal and two from Dale Rowland gave Westbury that six goal lead at the break. The second half saw Wayne Wheeler match Hampson’s hat-trick with three of his own in an even quicker time frame than Hampson. Further goals from Simon Dolbear and Mark Pearce completed the scoring for Westbury on a tough night for the Badgers. The big win saw Westbury move second in the table a point behind Melksham Town. Martin Pearce was at the game with his camera and more photos from the game in addition to the three shown in the round-up can be viewed on his website by clicking on THIS LINK.

FC Calne are another of the unbeaten sides and they maintained that record in the second 0-0 draw of the night at home to Radstock Town, the latter picking up their first point of the season although they have only played the two games so far. The point saw FC Calne occupy third spot in the table at the end of the night, again just that single point below Melksham but with a game in hand on the top two.

The third unbeaten side in the Mid Wiltshire Division are Devizes Town who made it two wins from their two games so far with a 3-1 away success over Trowbridge Town Tigers at Selwood Academy. Rhys Schell, who had finished as top scorer in the Veterans’ Divisions last season when with Bradford Town, once again amongst the goals for his new club, an own goal and one from Chris Evans completing the scoring for Devizes. Trowbridge Town’s consolation goal came from their usual source, Clifford Sayki who has been their top scorer every season in the league with the goal.

The final game on Monday night saw Corsham Town and Chippenham Town share four goals and the points at the Southbank Ground. Both Chippenham goals were scored by James Weston, whilst the reply from Corsham came through Steve Tweddle and Stephen Casey. The point for Corsham sees them sit fifth in the table whilst Chippenham are two places and two points behind in seventh spot.
There were also five games in the North Division this week with four of them taking place on Tuesday night. By the end of the night last season’s champions Redhouse sat top of the table after two goals from last season’s top scorer David Rendle, doubling his total for the season in the process, saw them come away from Merton Fields with all three points following a 2-0 away win over Stratton Juniors Orange. Despite the defeat Stratton Juniors remained just below Redhouse in the table.

Cricklade Town suffered their first defeat of the season as they went down 3-1 away at Chisledon. Star of the show for Chiseldon was Richie Miles who scored all three Chiseldon goals, taking his total for the season to an impressive seven goals from three games, Ryan Keech with the consolation goal for Cricklade. The win saw Chiseldon become one of six teams on six points behind Redhouse in the table ahead of the final game on Wednesday night.

Joining Chiseldon on those six points were both Blunsdon and Swindon Old Boys who both secured narrow 2-1 wins on Tuesday night. Blunsdon were up against bottom of the table Stratton Juniors Black at Sutton Park. Stratton went close to securing their first point of the season with their closest game so far this season but were denied by two goals from Jamie Saunders for Blunsdon, Aidan Doyle with the Stratton goal.

Swindon Old Boys and AFC Swindon met on the 3G at New College and the game was decided by a second Swindon Old Boys goal with the very last kick of the game. The winning goal was scored by Andrew King with his second of the game, taking his total for the season to five, Andrew Hendry having netted the AFC Swindon goal. Once again AFC Swindon had pushed an opponent all the way and those first points of the season cannot be too far away.
The final game of the week in the North Wiltshire Division was on Wednesday night at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground between Royal Wootton Bassett Town and Swindon Rovers. Both teams had the chance to go top of the league with a win and it was a tight affair in the first half as the two sides turned round with the game still looking for its first goal. The goals eventually came in the second half, Jeremy Newton scoring twice and Chris Head one as Royal Wootton Bassett Town ran out 3-0 winners to go back top of the division ahead of Redhouse.
