 Trowbridge Win Again,
Larkhall Finally Beaten,
But Marlborough Town
Secure Result Of The Day

Marlborough Town who secured an impressive 2-0 win over Kintbury Rangers

League leaders Trowbridge Town travelled to Pewsey Vale looking to maintain their unbeaten record and extend their lead at the top of the table with nearest rivals Devizes Town involved in Fountain Trophies Cup action. Pewsey themselves are having a good season and Trowbridge would have been mindful that they had lost 2-0 on both their previous two visits to the Recreation Ground. It was a tight affair throughout with the game remaining without a goal until 15 minutes from time. It was player-manager Jamie Jordan who broke the deadlock getting on the end of a Ryan Baggs pass and put the ball away to make it 1-0. Trowbridge then gave themselves some breathing space shortly after when Owen Pearce fired in form 30-yards for his first goal of the season. The same player then made sure of all three points, slotting home to make the final score 3-0 to Trowbridge, a score line that gave little indication of how close the game had been until those final 15 minutes.
Whilst Trowbridge were extending their lead at the top, the biggest headline makers on the pitch today were Marlborough Town who defied their lowly position in the table to inflict what was only the third defeat of the season for Kintbury Rangers. Star of the show was Jake Farrell who opened the scoring on 25 minutes with a fine solo effort. It remained just the one goal in the game until just after the hour mark when Farrell added his and Marlborough’s second following a quick counterattack that also involved Rob Harland and Harry Womersley.  The 2-0 score line secured a third win of the season for Marlborough who climbed three places in the table and out of the bottom three. It also represented their first league win over Kintbury Rangers at the seventh attempt.
With Kintbury losing Wroughton took full advantage securing a home win over Stratton Juniors to take over third spot in the table. Leading scorer Jonathan Peachey-Score put them ahead, but Cory Cullen restored parity for Stratton with his eighth goal of the season as the teams turned round with all still to play for. The second half though belonged to Wroughton’s Luke Saunders who put his side back in front fifteen minutes into the second half and then completed a hat-trick with two long-range efforts to put his side 4-1 to the good. The second half had been tighter than the final score line would suggest but the clinical finishing from the home side was the main difference between the sides as Wroughton made it four wins on the bounce.
Frome Collegians had secured an impressive 6-2 win over Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development last week and they carried on where they left off last week with another big win, this time over Malmesbury Victoria Development. Frome took an early lead but were pegged back by a Joe Tranter equaliser for Malmesbury. That was to be as good as it got for Malmesbury as Frome added four more goals to secure a 5-1 win. Morgan Marsh led the way, smashing a hat-trick with Liam Milburn scoring the other two goals.

The final scheduled fixture at Blunsdon was called off very late in the day by intended visitors Shrewton United who advised their opponents and the league that they were unable to field a side just over an hour before kick-off.
The top match of the day in Division One was in Swindon where Kingsdown Lions’ visitors were Larkhall Athletic Development who started the day unbeaten in the league. Both teams went into the game knowing that a win for either side would send them top of the table with the leaders at the start of the day, Ludgershall Sports in cup action. In an entertaining first half, Kingsdown had two or three chances to take the lead but found themselves one down when Finley Norris curled a free-kick from the edge of the box into the top corner to make it 1-0 to visitors Larkhall. Kingsdown Lions got themselves back on level terms just after the half hour mark, U18 player Josh Atwell firing in a shot on the half-volley for his first goal in Senior football. Five minutes before half time Kingsdown went in front for the first time in the match, Tyler Wilkinson getting on the end of a Scott Stone corner to make it 2-1 to Kingsdown. That was not the end of the first half goals though as Larkhall’s Finley Norris netted for his second of the game, smashing a shot into the top corner of the net for 2-2 and his eleventh of the campaign, giving him outright leadership of the Division 1 goal scorers chart. The second half didn’t quite match the entertainment of the first and became more of a physical battle and the match was ultimately decided from the penalty spot, Josh Barnfield scoring the spot kick for Kingsdown. Larkhall threw everything at Kingsdown to try and maintain their unbeaten start in the league but some solid defending from the Lions ensured that it was Kingsdown who took the three points ending that unbeaten record. The two sides are set to meet again next week for a game that could go a long way to deciding the Division One title race. The win for Kingsdown sent them top of the table with Larkhall Athletic Development dropping out of the top three due to results elsewhere, but they have a minimum of two games in hand over all of the three sides above them in the table.
The other game played in Division One was at Kintbury Recreation Ground where Devizes Town Reserves were Kintbury Rangers Development’s visitors. When the two sides had met earlier in the season it had finished all square and with just three points and one place in the table separating the two sides at the start of the day another close contest was anticipated. Devizes led 1-0 at the break thanks to a debut goal from James Cox and added two more in the second half through Olly Barnes and Liam Moffat, with Macauley Sanchez pulling one back for Kintbury as Devizes ran out 3-1 winners to climb into the top three.

The three outstanding ties in the First Round of the Fountain Trophies Cup were completed with the three games seeing 23 goals. Twelve of them came at Nursteed Round where Premier Division Devizes Town, unbeaten in the league, had a comfortable passage into Round Two hitting 12 unanswered goals against Division One side Purton. Derek Wheeler led the way for Devizes scoring four times, Jamie Walters and Kassa Anderson both bagged a brace and there were further goals from Sam Tallis, Keiron Gleed, Zac Hillier and Jack Baker. Devizes Town will now be away to Kintbury Rangers in the Second Round.

Another Division One side up against Premier Division opposition were Ludgershall Sports who had started the day as Division One league leaders ahead of their trip to take on Royal Wootton Bassett Town Dev. It started well for them at the Sustain Stadium where they took the lead thanks to an own goal, but the home side got themselves back on level terms through a headed goal from Ben Spackman. Royal Wootton Bassett Town took the lead for the first time in the match from the penalty spot, George Lance putting the spot kick away for 2-1. A second penalty award for the home side saw the same outcome as Lance doubled his tally for the afternoon. Two further goals from leading scorer Kevin Lartey ensured it was Royal Wootton Bassett Town Development who progress to the Second Round courtesy of a 5-1 win where their opponents in the next round will be Melksham Town Reserves.

Melksham Town Reserves made it through to that Second Round with their first win under new manager Justin Flowers, a 4-1 away success at Odd Down Development. On target for Melksham were Jake Dodge, who bagged a brace, Owen Allison and Brandon Vincent, the Odd Down goal coming courtesy of an own goal. Odd Down went into today’s game with manager Mark Brown sadly in hospital with a serious injury following a car accident earlier this week. The thoughts of everyone at the Wiltshire Senior League are with Mark for a full and speedy recovery.
