Storm Ciran Takes Its Toll,
AFC Swindon Upset RBT

There were four games scheduled in the Mid Wiltshire Veterans' Division of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League this week but in the end just two games were completed due to the impact of Storm Ciaran. The game on Monday night between Radstock Town and Winsley was abandoned when the rain that fell washed away all of the line markings and the referee was forced to call a halt to proceedings. Then on Thursday night the one outstanding First Round League Cup game between Devizes Town and Coate was also postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Having been postponed twice now at Devizes, under the cup rules the game now falls to be a home tie for Coate.

There was no problem with the weather in terms of the two games this week at Green Lane. On Monday night Chippenham Town maintained their title challenge with a hard fought 2-1 win over Westbury United thanks to goals from Ryan Nicholls and Martin Riddell, Wayne Wheeler replying for Westbury with his fifth goal of the season. The win for Chippenham saw them move above Melksham Town into second place and to within a point of leaders Warminster Town having played one more game than the leaders.

Corsham Town moved level on points with Melksham and three points behind the leaders with a comfortable 4-0 win over bottom of the table Amesbury Junior Badgers. Two goals for Adrian Webb in this one with further goals from Liam Ralph and Daniel Beck. Corsham have a game in hand over the leaders but have played one more than Melksham but look like they will once again be mounting a serious title challenge this season.

There were no such problems with pitches and the rain in the North Wiltshire Veterans’ Division with all three games taking place on 3G, including a first use of an additional slot at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground on a Friday night. The action got underway on Tuesday night at New College where Stratton Juniors and Swindon Old Boys met. Swindon Old Boys had won their last game which had been in the League Cup, and they made it back-to-back wins with a comfortable 6-1 win in the league over a struggling Stratton Juniors side. Both Andrew King and Barry Dickens bagged a brace and there were further goals for Wayne Rickwood and Joe Anderson. The consolation goal for Stratton was scored by leading scorer Vince McMackin who, despite his teams struggles, is now the joint leading scorer in the division.

The following night league leaders Redhouse were back in action in what looked a tough looking fixture against Penhill United. Goals from Leigh Brown and David Pratt ensured Redhouse kept their title challenge on track with a 2-0 win which saw them move six points clear at the top of the table, although they have played more games than all of their fellow challengers.

Friday night saw the first Friday game played in the North Wiltshire Division this season with an additional occasional slot at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground having become available to ease some of the fixture scheduling challenges. Royal Wootton Bassett Town were looking to maintain their quest for honours this season but having lost two games already they could ill afford to drop any more points. They were up against a much-improved AFC Swindon side who have been tough opponents for the leading sides this season and proved to be just that once again. Whilst Royal Wootton Bassett created a number of good chances, they failed to take any of them and then fell to a late winner for AFC Swindon from Jeremy Hope to condemn them to their third league defeat of the season. This was the first time in five seasons that AFC Swindon had got the better of their opponents. With the table having now been adjusted for the withdrawal of Nomads, AFC Swindon moved to within two points of their beaten opponents.

Next week's fixtures are dominated by the Second Round of the Wiltshire FA's County Cup with three league games also set to take place. Top match in the County Cup looks to be the game on Friday between the current Mid Wiltshire Division league leaders Warminster Town and cup holders Melksham Town.
