Wiltshire County Cup
Dominates Week's Vets' Action

This week’s action in the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League Veterans’ Divisions was dominated by games in the Wiltshire County FA’s Veterans’ County Cup with five games played in the Second Round of the competition.

On Monday night Chippenham Town from the Mid Wiltshire Division took on unbeaten Coate from the North Wiltshire Division at Green Lane, Devizes. Both teams are having good seasons in their respective divisions, and both sat third in their league table ahead of Monday night’s encounter. It was the side from the North who came out on top in this one, a goal in each half from Brady Lilley and Kevin Gulliver ensuring it would be Coate who would progress to the last eight of the competition.

The same night there was an inter-divisional match up at Selwood Academy where Trowbridge Town Tigers hosted Westbury United. Two goals from both Dale Rowland and Wayne Wheeler secured a 4-0 win for Westbury who became the first side from the Mid Wiltshire Division into the draw for the quarter final.

On Tuesday night there was a tie involving two sides from the North Wiltshire Division with Cricklade Town entertaining AFC Swindon. When the two sides had met in the league earlier in the season it had been a tight game with Cricklade eventually securing a 2-0 win and AFC Swindon came into the game on the back of last week’s win over Royal Wootton Bassett Town looking to knock-out one of the favoured teams in the County Cup competition. There was to be no upset though as Cricklade secured a comfortable passage through to the last eight courtesy of an 8-1 win. Leading scorer TJ Bohane scored four of the Cricklade goals, Adam Smith bagged a brace and there were further goals from Matt Richards and Marcus Hall.

The following night Royal Wootton Bassett Town from the North Wiltshire Division were in action taking on the only side in the County Cup not playing in the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League, Redlynch & Woodfalls who play in the Southampton Saturday Veterans’ League. In a tight affair a solitary goal from former Shrewton United manager Jesse Walters settled matters in Redlynch & Woodfalls favour as Royal Wootton Bassett Town fell to a 1-0 defeat for the second consecutive week.

The final game of the week in the Veterans’ County Cup was scheduled for Friday night at Weymouth Street Warminster where the two of the leading sides in the Mid Wiltshire Veterans’ Division, cup holders Melksham Town and Warminster Town were set to play each other. Unfortunately a waterlogged pitch meant that the game was postponed and the two teams will try again next Monday at Melksham.

As well as the cup games this week there were three league games played, two in the Mid Wiltshire Division and one in the North. That game in the North Wiltshire Division saw Chiseldon climb a couple of places in the table to fifth spot following a 3-1 win over Blunsdon. It was a good night for Richie Miles who scored all three of the Chiseldon goals.

The two league games in the Mid Wiltshire Division on Monday night produced 13 goals between the two matches. Biggest scorers were Corsham Town who put seven past Durrington who have faded a little after a promising start to the season, 7-1 the final score. Star of the show for Corsham was Jamie Lyons who hit a hat-trick, Simon Gray scored twice, with Liam Ralph and Adam Taylor netting the other Corsham goals, Ben Reilly with the sole reply for Durrington.

Calne Town are now finally back playing at MOD Lyneham and were playing their first league game of the season at their home ground having had to utilise Green Lane up until now. They certainly seemed happy to be back on home 3G as goals from Stuart Ballinger, Paul Maddox, Chris Pitman and Chris Robinson secured a 4-1 win over Radstock Town, James Billing with the consolation goal for Radstock.
