  Redhouse Inflict a 2nd Defeat
of the Season on Coate

The big game of the week in the two Veterans’ Divisions was in the North Wiltshire Division on Tuesday night at Green Lane with unbeaten leaders Redhouse up against Coate who had lost just the once prior to Monday night’s encounter, that defeat coming at the hands of the other side in the title race, Cricklade Town. The two sides had also met in the semi final of the League Cup a fortnight ago and on that occasion Coate had come out on top winning 2-0 and they were hoping to complete and league cup double over Redhouse. The two sides served up a close and entertaining encounter that saw Redhouse edge it by the odd goal in five to avenge that cup defeat. Lance Lewis had made his debut for Redhouse in that cup encounter, stepping in the shoes of leading scorer David Pratt who is no longer eligible this season having played for Highworth Town at Step 5. He didn’t find the net in that cup encounter, but manager Darren Grace could have found a ready-made replacement with Lewis bagging a brace in the 3-2 win that kept his side top of the table, Chris Hawkins with the other Redhouse goal. On target for Coate were Paul Stonehouse and a fifth of the season from Andrew Goodchild.

Cricklade Town remain just one point behind Redhouse after a comfortable 6-1 victory over Swindon Old Boys. Leading scorer TJ Bohane helped himself to a hat-trick to take his tally for the season to 18 and with the Division’s leading scorer Pratt now unable to add to his total will be eying up the Division’s leading scorer position, he is now just four goals behind Pratt. The other scorers on Tuesday night for Cricklade were Matt Richards, Phil Corcoran and Mike Solan.

The third game in the Division played on a busy Tuesday night was at New College where Stratton Juniors and AFC Swindon shared four goals and the points. Jeremy Hope put AFC Swindon 1-0 up but Niall Francis levelled matters up with an equaliser for Stratton Juniors. Rob Sawyer put AFC Swindon back in front but a late goal from Stratton’s leading scorer Vince McMackin ensured a share of the spoils for his side.  Stratton remain rooted to the bottom of the table but with two draws and a narrow single goal defeat in their last three games they certainly look to be improving under their new management team.

The final game of the week in the North Wiltshire Division was on Wednesday night at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground and it saw Swindon Rovers climb above Chiseldon in the table into fifth spot after defeating them 2-1 thanks to goals from Peter Byrne and Andrew Mark, Ashraf Ali with the reply for Swindon Old Boys.

Just three games were played in the Mid Wiltshire Veterans’ Division this week with Durrington unable to raise a side for their trip to Lyneham to take on Calne Town and the game at Radstock Town, who were scheduled to entertain Melksham Town, postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.   With Melksham and Corsham Town both inactive this week, Warminster Town had the chance to close the gap to the top two and they took full advantage with a 4-2 away win against Chippenham Town at Green Lane. They have relied heavily on the goals of James Vincent this season but for the second game running the source of their goals was elsewhere, with Louis Sparey, Lee Davidson, Greg Lewis and an own goal doing the damage for Warminster. Sam Pring and Steve Tweddle with the two goals in reply for Chippenham Town. The win for Warminster saw them move to within two points of Melksham with a game in hand, and within seven points of leaders Corsham Town with two games in hand.

Westbury United continued their recent good form which has now seen the cup finalists lose just the once in their last seven games, that defeat a narrow 1-0 reverse at the hands of title chasing Warminster. Their latest victory was away to Trowbridge Town Tigers at Selwood Academy, leading scorer Dale Rowland scoring both goals in a 2-0 win to take his total for the season to 12.

Devizes Town could still have a big say in the destination of the league title with games in hand over the three sides above them in the table and games still to come against Corsham (twice), Melksham Town and Warminster Town in their final nine games. They recorded their biggest win of the season on Tuesday night with a 5-0 away win at Amesbury Junior Badgers. Rhys Schell led the way helping himself to a hat-trick with Jamie Mullings also bagging a brace. Devizes remain seven points behind Warminster but have a game in hand.
