The Southbank Ground, home of Corsham Town FC, will tomorrow afternoon host this season's final of the Fountain Trophies Cup, at what is its traditional home, although there is a slightly earlier start this season with the game set to kick-off at 2:00PM at the request of Corsham Town.
This is the 29th occasion in the last 30 finals of the Senior Cup competition that the final has been held at Corsham. The League are once again most grateful to Corsham Town FC for hosting the final, particularly given its late staging when a lot of grass pitches have already been decommissioned for summer maintenance work. Thank you also to league sponsors Corsham Print for the printing of matchday programme which will be available as part of the £3 admission price tomorrow.
The League Directors, Officers, Management Committee and Member Clubs also express their thanks to Paul Sebastianelli of Fountain Trophies who are sponsoring the Senior Cup for what is their eighth season after 24 seasons of sponsoring the league’s Junior Cup competition.
Congratulations to both Bemerton Heath Harlequins Reserves and Cricklade Town on reaching the final. Both teams have had excellent season’s and in Cricklade’s case it has been an exceptional one. With the prestigious Wiltshire Junior Cup and Division One league title already secured, tomorrow's cup final offers them the chance of securing a unique treble. With Bemerton Heath Harlequins having won the Wiltshire Junior Cup the previous season, tomorrows cup final also sees the last two winners of that prestigious county cup competition up against each other.
Whilst Cricklade have been accumulating the two pieces of silverware already this season, Bemerton have been playing their first season in the Premier Division of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League securing a well deserved eighth place finish in what ended up being a 17 team division after Blunsdon’s withdrawal. Bemerton started the season looking like they could be challenging for honours, but a mid-season blip saw them fall away only to then pick things up in the latter half of the season, which saw them win 11 of their final 15 games in all competitions to achieve that eighth place finish and a place in today’s final. Cricklade meanwhile have led from the front all season in their division eventually claiming the Division One title in the final week of the season, finishing three points clear of second placed Devizes Town Reserves with 24 wins from 28 league games, racking up an impressive 158 goals in the process.
Cricklade Town’s run to tomorrow's final has seen them defeat three Premier Division sides along the way. They became the first team this season to defeat eventual champions Kintbury Rangers, beating them 3-2 on their own ground in the First Round. They followed this impressive result up with another 3-2 win over Premier Division opponents, Park United their victims on this occasion in a game where Cricklade even gave up home advantage to allow the game to go ahead. The Quarter Final saw them involved in another close tie with Premier Division opposition, eventually winning 2-1 against Calne Town Reserves to line up a Semi Final with fellow Division One side Lambourn Sports. It was to be a lot more comfortable passage for Cricklade in that Semi Final, winning 5-1 to book their place at Corsham for the final.
Bemerton Heath Harlequins Reserves have played one game less to reach the final having been given a bye in the First Round having drawn Ludgershall Sports who pulled out of the league before the season started. Their first match in the competition was a tight affair against fellow Premier Division side Faringdon Town, Bemerton eventually edging it 3-2 to progress to the last eight. In that Quarter Final their opponents were Division One side Bratton who they entertained in midweek under lights, running out comfortable 3-0 winners to make it through to the last four. In the Semi Final it was again Division One opponents in the shape of promotion chasing Down Ampney and it was to prove to be a much closer encounter, with Bemerton eventually emerging victorious thanks to a very late winner in an entertaining game that saw five goals scored.
Bemerton will be appearing in their first ever final whilst Cricklade Town will be playing in the final of this competition for the fifth time, having won the cup twice previously and been beaten finalists on three occasions. The two cup wins came in Seasons 1999-2000 and 2000-01, these victories coming after Cricklade had lost in successive finals to Shrewton United as Cricklade made the final four season's running in a highly successful period for the club. Cricklade's last appearance in the final was in Season was in Season 2017-18 when they lost to Melksham Town Reserves in the final.
This season's final has all the makings of being an excellent game between two in-form teams and hopefully there will be plenty of goals to entertain the crowd, with the game played in the right spirit. Best of luck to both teams who will be playing each other in the league next season following Cricklade's promotion.
