Harry Lawton heads home to give Shrewton an early lead in their 4-0 win at Calne Town Res

Premier Division

Shrewton United edged ever closer to the league title with a comfortable away win at Calne Town Reserves. A blistering start in the opening five minutes saw them score twice against the young Calne Town side. A ball into the box from Kian Tydeman, who was playing only his second game since returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury, was met by the head of Harry Lawton to put the visitors 1-0 up. Tydeman then went from provider to scorer, a sharp turn in the box seeing him escape two defenders allowing him to fire into the bottom corner of the net for 2-0. Shrewton thought they had extended their lead when Tydeman again had the ball in the net, but he had just mistimed his run, and the goal was disallowed for offside.  Credit to the young Calne side who did not allow the two early goals to unsettle them, and they grew into the game as the half wore on. On 25 minutes Cameron Miller was forced into action, the Shrewton keeper pulling off a good save with his feet to maintain his sides 2-0 lead. At the other end Calne defended well against a series of Shrewton corners, dealing comfortably with the aerial ability of Jack Vallis. However, they nearly fell further behind just after the half hour mark when a ball from Tom Plank put Lewis Cross clear in on goal but he somehow managed to put his effort the wrong side of the post. There was to be no further goals in the closing stages of the half as the two sides turned around with Shrewton holding that 2-0 lead. The second half saw the young Calne side match their title chasing opponents and it wasn’t until just after the hour mark that Shrewton were able to engineer another decent chance, a shot into the box looked to be going well wide but Charlie Utterson attempted to try and divert it into the net but saw his effort go high over the bar. Shrewton were now back on top and in search of further goals. Shrewton did eventually extend their lead, Tydeman getting in behind the defence and making no mistake for his second of the game 14 minutes from time. Tydeman was to then roundoff an excellent afternoon for the returning striker when he was clean through on goal and brought down in the box. He took responsibility for the resulting penalty giving the Calne Town keeper no chance to complete his hat-trick as Shrewton ran out 4-0 winners in a sporting contest between the two sides.  That penalty goal was goal number 99 of the season for Shrewton, and they will go in search of the 100th goal when they visit Shrivenham in a fortnight’s time. With two games to go, Shrewton need just one more win to secure the title and will be hoping to get that win from that visit to Shrivenham. Meanwhile nearest rivals Swindon Supermarine Development and Larkhall Athletic Development now know they have to win all of their remaining four games if they are to pip Shrewton to the title, with Larkhall set to visit Shrewton on Saturday 25th April. Calne Town Reserves had been in action in midweek picking up a useful point away from home against Trowbridge Town. George Bendle had given Trowbridge the lead but a late equaliser for Calne from Hugo White ensured the young Calne Town side secured that point. However, Saturday’s defeat against Shrewton means they cannot now escape the bottom three and will end the season in the potential relegation zone and are likely to be playing in Division One next season although they may yet have a cup final to end the season on a high.

Swindon Supermarine Dev were also in midweek action and climbed up to second spot in the table with a 4-2 win over Devizes Town Reserves. The two sides were level at the break but a much improved second half showing saw Swindon Supermarine secure the three vital points in their quest for honours. On target for the home side were Tom Pitt, Casey Spencer-Harding, Jed Phillips and goal number 18 of the season from Tom Phillips. The Devizes Town Reserves goals coming from Jack Baker and Kieron Gleed.

Melksham Town Reserves had moved up to fourth place in the table in midweek with a 2-0 home win over Wroughton thanks to goals from Kieron Higdon and Aron Byfield. They consolidated that fourth place position on Saturday with a hard-fought 2-1 away win at Pewsey Vale, with Tom Dowell and Josh Morse on target for the visitors, Cameron Sanchez with the Pewsey Vale goal. After their six point haul in the space of four days Melksham now sit 11 points behind third placed Larkhall and realistically it is looking like a fourth-place finish is the best they can now hope for, and they sit two points ahead of Shrivenham their nearest rivals for that fourth place having played two games less.

Shrivenham kept the pressure on Melksham as one goal in each half in their away encounter with Wroughton saw them win 2-0 in the “hoops derby” at the Weir Field, inflicting a defeat on their former manager Glenn Horsell that saw his side drop back in the relegation zone due to results elsewhere. On target for Shrivenham were Alfie Barker and Tom Ayres. Wroughton are back in action in midweek when they travel to Faringdon Town when they will be aiming for a much needed win to lift them back out of the drop zone..

The big game at

Division One

There was one game played in midweek in Division One of the Corsham Print Wiltshire Senior League and it saw Malmesbury Victoria Development reduce the gap to the teams above them with a 4-2 home win over bottom side Faringdon Town Development. There were two goals for Sam Parker with further goals coming from Robin Collier and Joe Liddington. On target for Faringdon were Taylor Hall and Bryce Chamberlain.

With a shortage of pitches due to first team fixtures, just four games were played in the division on Saturday. Second in the table Bishops Cannings were away to Redhouse in what was their penultimate fixture of the season. First half goals from Szymon Raczek, Callum Garbutt and Caleb Hollow put Bishops Cannings in a commanding position at the break. However, Redhouse rallied in the second half to score two of their own although further goals for Bishops Cannings from Tom Sharples and Harry Drewitt gave the visitors all three points. Next Saturday sees Bishops Cannings play their final game of the season and it is a big one at that, away to Bradford Town Reserves.

Bradford Town Reserves warmed up for that encounter with a 3-1 home win over Faringdon Town Development in a game littered with penalties. Harry Ledbury gave Bradford Town Reserves a 1-0 half time lead from the penalty spot. Logan Cassidy then doubled their lead with another penalty before Faringdon pulled one back, once again from the penalty spot. Tyler Robinson then made sure of the points with a third goal for Bradford Town Reserves. The win for Bradford Town saw them move up to third place in the table, 14 points behind leaders Fairford Town Reserves but with five games in hand.  Next week’s games could see Fairford Town crowned as champions if they can win their final game of the season against Purton Kingsdown Reserves and Bradford Town Reserves fail to beat Bishops Cannings.

Another side playing their penultimate game of the season were Great Western who were involved in a local derby encounter with Stratton. The two sides turned around at the break with the game still awaiting the opening goal, but Great Western upped their game in the second half to score three unanswered goals to run out 3-0 winners. There were two goals for Ethan Miller and one for Sam Lowrie against his former club.

The final game of the day in the division saw Shrivenham Development maintain their unbeaten home record with a 2-0 win over Pewsey Vale Development thanks to a Lewis Mokler goal and a converted penalty from Ruben Lewis. The win for Shrivenham saw them move above Redhouse into seventh spot in the table.
