 Men's Premier Division & Division 1

Proposed Constitution

The following notification was provided by League Secretary Jim Thorn to Club Secretaries this week.

For your early information, please find the proposed constitutions for the Premier Division and Intermediate Division 1 next season. These are the constitutions that will be proposed at the Annual General Meeting.

In the Premier Division, we welcome Fairford Town Res, Bishop’s Cannings and Bradford Town Res, who all won promotion from Division 1 plus Hungerford Town Res who won promotion direct to the Premier Division after winning the Alliance East Division in the Hellenic League. We’re sorry to be losing Letcombe who, because of players and management moving on, have been forced to withdraw from the league. We wish them well and hope that they can rebuild and return in the future.

In Division 1, which now has Intermediate Status, we welcome Amesbury Town Dev from the Hampshire Combination League, East Hendred from the Witney & District League, Highworth Town Res from the Hellenic League and Wantage Town Res also from the Hellenic League plus Old Town Athletic and Warminster Town Res who both won promotion from their respective District Leagues.

Calne Town Res are relegated from the Premier Division but, having seen the strength of their U18’s, we expect to be seeing them challenging for promotion back. We’re sorry to be losing Great Western who, because of players and management moving on, have decided to move back to the Swindon & District and rebuild.

You will see that we’re again proposing to run with 18 teams in the Premier Division, so the season will start in early August and there will be midweek fixtures as we try to get ahead before the bad weather sets in. One thing we’re always being asked early in pre-season is when the fixtures will be published. With several teams sharing with Hellenic, Wessex and Western League teams (plus a couple with Southern League teams), we have to wait for the fixtures to be published for those leagues, so that we can avoid any clashes, but we’ll get them published as soon as we can.

Some of you will be aware from the various non-league forums and social media that the FA are looking to carry out a review of Steps 5 and 6 for season 2027/28. We’re awaiting confirmation of details but, one of the common beliefs is that they will reduce Division sizes. The popular belief is that they may reduce Step 5 Leagues to 20 teams max, Step 6 Leagues to 18 teams max and Regional Feeder Leagues (which includes us) to 16 teams. This is all currently speculation but, if it goes ahead, promotion and relegation numbers in our Premier Division may well be affected at the end of the forthcoming season. As and when I receive any confirmation, I’ll let everyone know.

One final note for now is to advise that our Annual General Meeting will be on Tuesday 16th June at Coleview Community Centre, Swindon.
