Club History
The club was formed as Melksham F.C. in 1876 and played at Challymead Common, before moving to The Old Bear Field in 1883 where it stayed until a move to The Conigre ground in 1920.  In 1894 Melksham became founding members of the Wiltshire League. They then spent the next eighty years in the Wiltshire league, during which time they won the league once in the 1903–04 Season and then went on to win the prestigious Wiltshire Senior Cup in the following season. The club has since gone on to win the Wiltshire Senior Cup on seven more occasions although they had to wait until 1969-70 to win it for a second time. Melksham Town established a reserve side early on in the club’s existence and this reserve team also quickly achieved league title success winning Division 2 of the Wiltshire League in Season 1905-06.

The ground at The Conigre was part of the Melksham House estate which was purchased by The Avon Rubber Company in 1920. The house was turned into a social club for company employees and the grounds, including The Conigre were to be used for sporting activities. The only condition imposed on the football club for the use of The Conigre was that it be renamed Melksham & Avon Utd F.C. During the first season at The Conigre the Avon Rubber Company spent £1,000 on providing a stand and fencing around the ground. In 1926-27 the club reverted back to the name Melksham Town.

When football recommenced after the end of the Second World War Melksham remained in the Wiltshire League with the first team in Division One and the reserve side in Division 2 until Season 1953-54 when the league established a dedicated reserve team division. Both sides had limited success in the early 1950’s but, following a 3rd place finish in 1956-57, the first team finished as runners-up in Season 1959-60 behind champions Westbury United. A change in set-up in Senior football in the county ahead of Season 1956-57 saw the reserve side, along with a number of other reserve sides from Senior clubs in the county, move across to the Trowbridge & District League where they were to have great success. In the Trowbridge League the Melksham Town Reserve side were runners-up in Division 1 in 1956-57, 1959-60 and 1976-77 and won the Division 1 Championship in 1957-58, 1960-61, 1970-71 and 1971-72. They also won the league’s A&B Cup on seven occasions, including the first three seasons in the league, 1956-57 through to 1958-59. They won the cup again in 1960-61, 1968-69, 1970,71 and 1975-76. They also won the KO Cup twice in Season 1965-66 and 1970-71 and were losing finalists on three occasions.

In the late 1960s The Conigre was further developed with the erection of the covering standing enclosures on two sides. A clubhouse followed in 1976 and then the erection of floodlights in 1986. In the early 1990s the old wooden stands had to be dismantled, a legacy of Health & Safety measures following the Bradford fire in 1985. A new stand was erected in 1994.

Melksham first team had left the Wiltshire League for the first time in the 1974-75 season when the club entered the Western League. They won Division One in 1979–80, gaining promotion to the Premier Division. They stayed in the division until they were relegated in 1988. The club left the Western League in 1993, when they were relegated back to the Wiltshire County League after finishing in bottom position. However, they returned to the Western league after just one season when under manager Mel Gingell, they won the Wiltshire County League. Back in the Western League a successful 1996–97 campaign under manager Darren Perrin, saw Melksham promoted to the Premier Division, as champions. The club then spent the next thirteen seasons in the top division of the Western League before being relegated to Division One again at the end of the 2009–10 campaign. At the end of the 2011–12 season the club gained promotion back to the Premier Division when they finished as runners-up in Division One. In the 2014-15 season Melksham won the Western Football League Premier Division but could not be promoted to the Southern League due to not being able to meet ground rules on time. That dream of Southern League football was finally achieved at the end of Season 2017-18 when they finished runner-up and gained promotion, the club having moved to Oakfields, a stunning new £7.3 million facility shared with Melksham Rugby Club on the eastern edge of the town that more than met any ground grading regulations.

The reserve team of the club had joined the Wiltshire County League in the second season of the league’s existence and had immediate success, winning the Division 4 title in their first season in our league. With their first team already playing in the Western League the reserve side moved up a division each season and by Season 1980-81 were playing in the top division of the league. They remained in the top division for six seasons before dropping back into the Trowbridge & District League. They spent two seasons back in the Trowbridge & District before returning to the Wiltshire League, joining Division 2 where they remained for five seasons. When their first team dropped back into the Wiltshire League in Season 1993-94 the reserve side were forced to drop down to Division 3 but re-joined Division 2 when the first team achieved promotion back to the Western League and they won the Division 2 title in their first season back at this level.

After two seasons in the top division in the league they were relegated back to Division 2 but quickly returned to the topflight as they lost just once all season in taking the Division 2 title in Season 1997-98. The next twelve seasons were spent in the now re-branded Premier Division, their best achievement being a runners-up position in Season 2008-09, when they also won Corsham Print Senior KO Cup.

Season 2010-11 saw the reserve team drop back down to the Trowbridge & District League where they once again had immediate success winning the Division 2 title and then achieving two top four finishes in Division 1, achieving runners-up in the second of those seasons. This prompted a return to the Wiltshire League. They won Division 1 in their first season back, the third occasion they had lifted the second-tier title and returned to the Premier Division where they have remained ever since. In their first five seasons back in the Premier Division Melksham Town Reserves were consistently successful, never finishing outside the top four and winning the Senior Knock-out Cup on two more occasions in Season 2014-15 and then again in Season 2017-18. Melksham Town Reserves were also going well in both the two seasons that were cut short due to Covid. They sat fifth in the table in Season 2019-20 and also into the semi finals of the Fountain Trophies Cup when that season was brought to an early end and sat second in the table in Season 2020-21 when that season was also brought to a premature end by Covid. Season 2021-22 saw the side under new management and whilst a ninth place finish would appear disappointing by the own high standards they were just three points off fifth place in a tight final league table.

Season 2022-23 saw Melksham Town Reserves spend virtually all season at the bottom of the table but a change of manager mid-season and a tremendous run at the end of the season, which saw them win six of their last eight games, including that win over title chasing Devizes Town which inflicted so much damage on their title aspirations, saw Melksham secure their Premier Division safety.
