Club Notes
National Semiconductor were a highly successful works team of an American organisation that moved some of its UK operations down from Scotland to Swindon. They first joined the Swindon & District League in Season 1984-85, starting life in Division Three, and were immediately a force to be reckoned with. They were promoted at the end of the season behind Champions Greatfield United and also made the final of the Swindon & District League Junior Cup in that first season. It was noted in George Thomas’ book, “100 Years of Football in the Swindon & District League” that they demonstrated their Scottish roots at the cup final, being welcomed onto the pitch by a Scottish piper. In the first staging of the final they shared six goals with Burmah House, and a replay was needed to settle matters. There was not to be a happy ending for National Semiconductor though as they lost the replay 2-1.

Season 1985-86 once again was a successful one in Division Two of the Swindon & District League as National Semiconductor finished runners-up, with Greatfield United again the champions to earn a second consecutive promotion. A third place finish the following season saw them promoted for the third consecutive season as they reached the top division in the Swindon & District League in short order.

Season 1987-88, their first in the Premier Division of the Swindon & District league, saw them take the championship at the first attempt, as they took the title ahead of Greatfield United. The following season saw them finish in fourth spot and at the end of the season they elected to seek new challenges for the following season by joining the Wiltshire County League.

The five seasons that National Semiconductor were to spend in the Wiltshire League, like their time in the Swindon & District League, were highly successful. Their first season in the league in Division Four saw them finish in third place behind champions Wootton Bassett Sports and runners-up Pinehurst, with all three gaining promotion to Division Three at the end of the season. They repeated that third place finish in both of their first two seasons in Division Three, where Sunray Badbury won the league in both seasons, National Semiconductor finishing behind Chiseldon in 1990-91 and Salisbury the following season. Season 1992-93 saw them slip one place to fourth spot, their lowest finishing position in a division the whole time they were in the league. They certainly bounced back in style the following season taking the Division Three title, finishing some ten points clear of runners-up Aldbourne Park Reserves. They also made the final of the Fountain Trophies Junior Cup but missed out on doing the double as they lost 4-2 to Melksham Town Reserves in the final.

This was to be the end of an era though as National Semiconductor pulled out of the league after their title win and cup final appearance. They were certainly an extremely successful side in their short time in the league, winning over 61% of 132 league fixtures. Their full record in the league is shown below.
