Club Notes
For full details of the history of the first teams associated with the team names above see the separate page setting out the history of Sarsen United through to Southbrook via the Dunbars and Westside.

When Sarsen’s first team moved up to Senior status in Season 1977-78 they also entered a reserve side in Division 4. Sarsen Reserves were to remain in Division 4 of the league for all six seasons that they played under that name and generally struggled towards the bottom end of the table. The one exception was their final season under the Sarsen name when they achieved a top half finish in seventh place in a division that contained eighteen teams.

Season 1983-84 saw the club change its name to Wills Reserves, the name reflecting that of the company who owned the sports ground on which their matches were played. As with their first team, the change in name also led to an improvement in fortunes as, after finishing seventh again in 1983-84, they then moved up to fifth place in Season 1984-85. An influx of new clubs to the Junior divisions meant that the fifth-place finish was enough to secure promotion to Division 3 for the following season.

That first season in Division 3 was to prove a tough baptism as Wills Reserves won just four of their 32 league games, losing 25 to finish bottom of the table. They were however reprieved from relegation due to other clubs leaving the league. Their second season in the top Junior division saw a much-improved performance, with only half of the games resulting in defeats and a 13th place finish, well clear of the relegation positions.

There was to be another change in name at the start of the 1987-88 Season as the name of a second local company Allied Dunbar was incorporated into the club name, Wills Reserves becoming Dunbar Wills Reserves. They remained in Division 3 and continued to play at the Wills Sports Ground and Season 1987-88 saw them continue their upward trend finishing in seventh place in the table.

Season 1988-89 was to prove a difficult one for Dunbar Wills Reserves, whilst their first team were achieving their highest position to date, the reserves had a tough season, winning just one of their 32 league games to finish bottom of the table, some seven points adrift of their nearest rivals and this time they were relegated back to Division 4.
A much improved season in 1989-90 saw them finish in fourth place and just four points behind champions Wootton Bassett Sports but this was to be their last season in the league for a couple of seasons as the loss of the pitch at the Wills Sports Ground forced the club’s first team to drop to Junior status and the Reserves were forced to leave the league.

Season 1991-92 saw Dunbar Wills move to the superb Allied Dunbar Training Centre complex at King Edwards Place, Wanborough. The excellent facilities at this new ground allowed Senior status to be regained and Dunbar Wills first team played in Division 2 of the league and the Reserve team were back in Division 4. The first two seasons back at this level saw Dunbar Wills Reserves finish in the bottom three places. Season 1993-94 saw the club drop the Wills from the name as they became Dunbar Athletic. Whilst the change of name saw an up-tick in fortunes for the club’s first team, it was not the case for the reserves who remained in the bottom half of the Division 4 table for the next five seasons before pulling out of the league at the start of the 1998-99 Season.

A reserve side would not return to the league until Season 2000-01. By this time Dunbar Athletic had merged with the successful Westside United club formed by Ron Sproule. Westside United had started life as a youth side in the Swindon & District League in 1991 and had been phenomenally successful, winning many league titles and cups across various age groups. Westside had also adapted well to adult football doing the double in their first season in the Wiltshire League. The combined club continuined to play at King Edward Place Wanborough and with the first team playing at Senior level a reserve team was entered in what was now Junior Division 2 (previously Division 4).

A successful first season saw Dunbar Westside Reserves finish in fourth place which was enough to secure promotion to Junior Division 1 for the following season. The next two seasons saw gradual progression as Dunbar Wills Reserves finished in 12th place in 2001-02 and then improved to 7th position in 2002-03. That season also saw Dunbar Westside Reserves make the semi-final of the Fountain Trophies Cup where they lost narrowly to eventual winners Cricklade Town Reserves in what was the best performance of the reserve side in that competition during their time in the league. However, Season 2002-3 was to prove a problematical one with pitches again, as the club were forced to find an alternative ground. Zurich, formerly Allied Dunbar and owners of the ground at King Edwards Place, gave the club notice that they had to vacate the ground by December 31 2002 due to the team having less than 50% of its playing members from the company. The club moved to Greendown School in West Swindon in order to complete the season.

Season 2003-04 saw an insufficient number of clubs at Intermediate status, so the league reverted back to two Junior Divisions. Westside’s first team who had been in the Intermediate Division, the club having understandably now dropped the Dunbar from the name, were placed in Junior Division One which meant that their reserve side were able to remain in Junior Division 2. The following three seasons were all difficult season’s for Westside Reserves after a bottom three finish in Season 2003-04 they were to finish bottom of the table in each of the next three seasons. Season 2005-06 was particularly tough as they failed to win a single game in their 24 league fixtures. After another bottom of the table finish in Season 2006-07 Westside withdrew their reserve side from the league.
