Club History
Swindon Supermarine football club was founded in 1992 from the amalgamation of two established Hellenic League clubs - Swindon Athletic and Supermarine. After the merger Swindon Supermarine regularly finished in the top eight in the Hellenic Premier Division. The merged club won their first silverware in Season 1996-97 when they won the Wiltshire Premier Shield defeating Devizes Town in the final and also won the Hellenic Premier Division Challenge Cup beating Kintbury Rangers in the final. Under the guidance of John Fisher and former Swindon Town star Don Rogers Season 1997-98 season saw the team secure their first Hellenic Premier Division title. The Hellenic Premier Division title was won again in 2000-01 and the club was promoted to the Southern League.
The first two seasons in the Southern League saw Swindon Supermarine struggle at the wrong end of the table but they managed to retain their place in the league, winning seven of their last eight league games in the second season to retain that Southern League status. The appointment of Mark Collier as manager saw the club have its most successful season to date in 2005-06 with a fifth place finish and a place in the end of season play-off's. Unfortunately, the side lost in the playoffs to a strong Hemel Hempstead Town who went on to secure promotion to the Premier Division. The 2006-07 season was another successful one as the team once again made the play offs and this time duly went on to win the play-off final, a 2-0 victory over Taunton Town to take the club into the Southern League Premier Division for Season 2007-08. The team were also successful in winning the Wiltshire Premier Shield again with a 2-1 victory over Swindon Town in the final.
The first season in the Southern League Premier Division saw the side finish in a very creditable 12th place. Season 2008-09 saw the team in the top six in January and an excellent FA Trophy run saw them into the last 16, eventually going out against Conference side Ebbsfleet. The cup run meant the side had to play three games a week in the last month or so and dropped out of contention for a play-off place, finishing in mid-table. The following season, 2009-10, saw the club struggle at the wrong end of the table and it was only in March that they moved out of the relegation places with a run of good results and finished in 15th position.
During the summer of 2010, the club released a statement indicating that the team was likely to be disbanded and the club leave the Southern League due to a lack of funding. They appealed for the friends and supporters of the club to help with a survival plan. A new committee was formed to take the club into the new season and still in the Southern League. The 2010-11 season saw the club maintain its Southern League Premier Division status with a very creditable 10th place finish, but besides the solid league performance the team also had an exceptional FA Cup run when they went further than ever before as they reached the Second Round and only lost 1-0 away to League 1 side Colchester United. A memorable day for all connected to SSFC and its supporters.
Season 2011-12 ended in disappointment when the team were relegated from the Southern Premier Division to the Division One South & West after finishing in 22nd place. The two season that followed saw the club achieve two playoff finishes but both ended in semi-final defeats, both at the hands of Merthyr Town. Season 2015-16 season saw another end of season play-off but unfortunately, they lost at the semi-final stage again, a 2-1 defeat at Taunton Town. Season 2016-17 saw the team finish in sixth place, outside the play off positions but there was to be cup success with the club winning the Wiltshire Senior Cup, beating neighbours Highworth Town 2-1 in the final.
Season 2017-18 saw a fifth place finish and another playoff. A penalty shootout win over Evesham meant a playoff final at Wimborne Town. In another tight game, it ended 0-0 after extra time, Swindon Supermarine won 4-3 on penalties to achieve promotion back to the Southern League Premier Division. The first season back in the Premier Division in 2018-19 was a good one achieving an 11th place finish. The club has then remained in the Southern League Premier Division, the two Covid impacted seasons being followed by a 12th place finish in 2021-22, a sixth place finish in 2022-23, and then 16th in 2023-24. Unfortunately defeat in their final game of the 2024-25 season, away at Walton & Hersham, saw Swindon Supermarine relegated from the Southern League Premier Division back to Division One.
The Development team was started only recently, the side being established for the 2020-21 season, starting in Hellenic League Div 2 South. The team was started to be able to create a pathway for the youth section who run up to U18’s in the Southwest Counties League and allowing players to be exposed to the next step, that being adult football.
Unfortunately, the 2020-21 season was hit with the covid outbreak in which a positive start from the team was then to see them not return to football in a competitive match until the 2021-22 season started. Season 2021-22 saw the Development side push for title honours only to be pipped at the end by Highworth Town Development who claimed the top spot, with Supermarine having to settle for third spot in the end.
Season 2022-23 saw Swindon Supermarine Development continue from where they left off the previous season, bringing in new faces from the U18’s. The season ended up being a highly successful one with the Development side wining the league title and the Cricklade Challenge Cup.
That title success could not be repeated in Season 2023-24, but Swindon Supermarine Development did once again finish in the top three for the third consecutive season and sought to join the Wiltshire Senior League Premier Division. At this time the application was not successful but the establishment of the Pyramid Agreement which included the Hellenic League Division 2 facilitated an automatic promotion position if they were to finish in the top three the following season with no side above them in the table eligible for promotion to the league.
That promotion position was secured come the end of Season 2024-25, Swindon Supermarine finishing in second spot in the Hellenic League Division 2 Central Division, losing just two of their 18 league fixtures all season to finish three points behind eventual champions Headington Amateurs. Swindon Supermarine Development come into the Premier Division of the Wiltshire Senior League on the back of four successful seasons that saw them achieve a top three finish in all four seasons and will be expecting to do well in their new league.
